Vodafone matches donations for India as Covid-19 cases continue to surge

Vodafone and the Vodafone Foundation have stepped up to support UNICEF's urgent appeal and have pledged to triple every dollar donated

COVID-19 continues to tear families apart and take an unprecedented toll on hospitals and health centres in India. Vodafone and the Vodafone Foundation have stepped up to support UNICEF's urgent appeal and have pledged to triple every dollar donated.

Michelle Sharp, UNICEF NZ CEO says funds raised through the givealittle page will provide life-saving medical equipment and aid relief work in the country.

“UNICEF New Zealand is grateful for the support of Vodafone and the Vodafone Foundation. For every $10 donated, $30 will go to help on the ground in India and undoubtedly save lives,” says Sharp.

To date, UNICEF has sent 3,000 oxygen concentrators, diagnostic tests, medical kits and 85 COVID-19 testing machines. In addition, UNICEF is deploying experts to the worst hit areas to support authorities, assisting with the distribution of vaccines, and supporting communities and essential workers.

Lani Evans, Head of Foundation & Sustainability Vodafone NZ Foundation, says, “Vodafone has many staff, partners and whānau impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in India and we are deeply saddened by the escalating crisis. We proudly support UNICEF’s COVID-19 Crisis Appeal and encourage all New Zealanders to give generously.”

Donations to the COVID-19 Crisis in India appeal will:

  • Increase access to life-saving oxygen by procuring and installing Oxygen Generation Plants (OGPs) in hospitals to treat severe and critical COVID-19 cases;
  • Provide rapid, accurate testing machines in some of the most affected districts;
  • Support the ongoing distribution of COVID-19 vaccines through the UNICEF-supported COVAX initiative.

“This is a great opportunity to show the importance of solidarity in crisis and better shape the lives of children and families in India right now,” says Sharp. “We thank Vodafone and the Vodafone Foundation for their generosity and commitment to communities in India.”

All funds raised through givealittle will be donated to UNICEF New Zealand, which will be used in their relief initiatives throughout India.
