Independent testing shows Vodafone has best mobile network in Taranaki

International benchmarking leader umlaut shows Vodafone offers locals and visitors the best mobile network for in voice calls and mobile data in the region

Following significant investment into Vodafone NZ’s mobile network, independent testing from umlaut, now part of Accenture shows that Vodafone now offers customers in Taranaki faster data downloads and best speech quality for calling on the best network in the region.

This includes upgrading 10 mobile cell sites and building 14 new ones in Taranaki to ensure Vodafone customers have even better coverage. Approximately 96% of the Taranaki population will now have access to 4G and approximately 39% will have access to 5G.

Vodafone customers in Taranaki can expect a great uplift in terms of data and download speeds and the best call quality in the region. This is part of our ongoing nationwide program of upgrades and widespread deployment of 5G, to bring greater speeds and higher-quality calling to our customers.

“We also recently received the national Best in Test award from umlaut, showing that we have the best mobile network across Aotearoa. We continue to prove we are the best network for our customers, winning in every category umlaut tests in."

The umlaut certification report for Taranaki, which was conducted using a Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G device, shows:

  • Overall Vodafone scored 764/1000 for their network, compared with Spark’s 552 and 2Degrees’ 528.
  • In the data category Vodafone scored 396/600, compared with Spark’s 260 and 2 Degrees’ 302.
  • In the voice calling category Vodafone scored 368/400, compared with Spark’s 292 and 2Degrees’ 226.
  • Vodafone also has 5G available in 42% of the region compared to Spark with 33%. 2Degrees has not yet launched 5G in Taranaki.

The full report is available on the umlaut website. umlaut, now part of Accenture is the global leader in mobile benchmarking and undertook the drive testing in April 2022.

The drive testing route was independently selected by umlaut to best represent coverage in the region and drive testers travelled approximately 750 km around Taranaki.

The umlaut benchmarking methodology is the de-facto industry standard today. It is applied in more than 120 countries measuring over 200 mobile networks worldwide.
